- Sam's parents divorced when he was five. His family had moved to New York but after the divorce, Sam moved back west with his dad.
- Sam graduated from J.A. McAteer High School in San Francisco.
- Sam returned to New York after his high school graduation and enrolled in private lessons at the William Esper acting studio.
- The last thing Sam does before going to bed is eat a bowl of cereal. Corn Chex, Grape Nuts or Fruit Loops are his favorites.
- Sam on growing up with "artsy" parents: "Both my parents were artists, so I grew up in a very
unconventional, bohemian way. (...) I'd visit my mom in the
summer and there'd be wild, flamboyant men out of an Andy
Warhol movie smoking dope on roofs, having sex, whatever. I
saw some pretty crazy shit when I was younger, I guess. But
most of the time my dad was really like my father and my
mother."
